Journaling Can Help to Cope with Anxiety by a Counselor in Colchester, CT

You have been worried and stressed about the pandemic and how it has impacted your life.  Your anxiety feels like it is an all-time high.  Your mind races with several worst case “what if” scenarios making it difficult to concentrate and sleep.  You want to relax, but you feel so uptight you are unsure how to even start to relax.  You turn to Google and start searching Counseling in Colchester, CT and Counseling in Hebron, CT. You read about online anxiety counseling in Colchester, CT and even book an intake appointment with a stress counselor.  But what can you do between now and your first counseling session?  This is where journaling can come in.

Sometimes the thought of journaling can be a turn off for people.  Many people think journaling has to look a certain way, be a certain format, or be written in a 5-paragraph essay format.  Nope!  It is for you and you only.  It is a way to get anxious thoughts out of your mind and onto paper.  It does not have to be neat or pretty.  Journaling can be sentences, phrases, words, pictures, or even doodles.  Sometimes we get stuck in analysis paralysis and do not know where to start.  Start somewhere, start anywhere.

Here are some writing prompt ideas to get you started:

1.        What am I anxious about?  - A great place to start! Here is an opportunity to write about what is making you anxious, the triggers, the stressors, and how you feel.

2.       Is there another emotion I am experiencing?  Often when we feel anxious, there can be other emotions we are experiencing.  For example, you feel anxious about pandemic stress.  You may also feel fearful of your health and may feel angry about the pandemic.

3.       How likely is it for my worry to happen?  This is one of my favorite prompts.  When feeling anxious, it is easy to go down the rabbit hold of worst-case scenario thinking.  I can not say bad things do not happen, but the worst-case scenarios that we build up in our mind typically do not happen.  Even if they do happen, it is not to the degree or intensity we made them out to be.

4.       How could I cope with the worst-case scenario if it did happen?  It may sound counter intuitive to think about the worst case scenario but it can help to think about it because it can help you plan or see how you can cope with it if it were to happen.  You may realize you are more resilient than you think you are.

5.       What are my top 3 coping skills for managing anxiety? This is a great prompt to help you think about how you can cope with anxiety or explore things you want to try.  You reflect on how reaching out to a trusted friend, doing some yoga, and doing some deep breathing helps you to feel calmer. You may also discover you want to work on drinking more water, walking more, and try meditation.

The journal prompts are endless.  Remember there is no one way to journal.
