You have been struggling for the past few weeks to months with anxiety. You feel irritable, often snapping or being short with your family and friends.  You feel worried about the state of the world, the pandemic, your job, household pressures, and even worry about how you will find time to relax.  You have a hard time falling asleep as you think about things you regretted doing or saying in your life.  You decide to work on taking good care of yourself, but you find it difficult to reach out to friends, difficult to concentrate in yoga, little patience to try a meditation app, and over all just cannot relax.  A friend of family member suggests trying therapy and now you think it is time.  You Google Counseling in Colchester, Ander Therapy, Counseling in Hebron, and Online Therapy in Colchester and feel overwhelmed with the search results.  This is where individual therapy at Azalea Counseling & Wellness, LLC can help.

Individual Therapy in Colchester, CT Can Help

Individual therapy (or counseling – the terms are often used interchangeably) is a process between a client and a therapist (or counselor) of processing emotions and stressors while learning new coping strategies.  The American Psychological Association defines individual therapy as “treatment of psychological problems that is conducted on a one-to-one basis.  One therapist sees one client at a time, tailoring the process to his or her unique needs in the exploration of contributory factors and alleviation of symptoms.”  Typically, the overall main goal in therapy is to create some level of change or improve some quality of life.  Often people start individual therapy because they are dealing with something that may be too difficult or too overwhelming to do alone.  Individual therapy gives extra support, so people are not alone in what they are facing.

How Does Individual Therapy Work?

During the first appointment (also know as an intake appointment), a therapist asks you about what has been going on in your life, questions about your mood, and questions about your functioning (how has your mood impacted your home life and work life).  You will be asked what you want to work on in therapy, what you would like to achieve, and what is your goal and the therapist will see how they may be able to help and offer treatment recommendations.  For more information on what a first session is like, please click here to read this blog post. In further appointments, you bring up what you wish to discuss with your therapist such as the problem that lead you to counseling, your feelings, your stress, etc. The therapist will listen, offer support, and identify coping strategies for you to practice outside of the therapy session.

Colchester Therapist - What Can I Expect from an Individual Therapy Session?

I the beginning of your session, your therapist will check in with you and ask you things such as how has your mood been, how have you been coping, and asking what you wish to talk about in the session.  It is your time to focus on you.  You decide what you want to talk about, process, explore, etc. It is also your time and space to not be judged in.  Your therapist will listen, support, and validate you , your feelings, and your experiences.  Depending on the goal you are working on, your therapist may offer a coping skills or strategy to try outside of the counseling session to work on reducing mood symptoms or better navigate a stressful situation.  You may be given homework (no worries, no essay writing!) to practice skills learned or observe patterns of behavior depending what you are working on.  During the next session, you will be asked to check in how you made out with the homework.  Currently, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, all anxiety therapy sessions are held online.  After the pandemic, sessions can be held in person or online.  For more information on online therapy, click here

Individual Therapy Can Be Helpful in Achieving Goals

Individual anxiety counseling can help to reduce worries, racing thoughts, and increase coping skills.  It can be helpful in improving relationships.  Individual therapy can also help to get a better understanding of ourselves.  Individual counseling is a vessel to help you work on creating solutions to your problems, reduce anxiety, reduce depression, learn new coping strategies, improve relationships, and better manage stress.  If you are thinking about individual online anxiety therapy, that thought is worth checking out.  It is ok to try individual therapy for a session or two or three and see if it is right for you.

What If I Do Not Find Individual Therapy Helpful or It Does Not Feel Like the Right Fit?

This happens.  Not every therapist is the right fit for every client.  Every therapist has their own style and personality and it might not be right for you.  Every therapist has a different educational background and therapy framework they use, and it is not for everyone.  It is ok and encouraged to let your therapist know if you feel therapy is not helpful or the right fit.  Your therapist understands will give you referrals for other therapists if you would like.  Sometimes a different treatment modality may be helpful such as couples counseling or group therapy depending on what you need is and what your treatment goals are.
